20 Giant Dogwood Seeds
Cornus controversa
Pagoda Tree, Pagoda Dogwood

Description: The Giant Dogwood is very picturesque due to its horizontal, tiered branching and extremely wide crown. Rather than rounding its crown with maturity, the Giant Dogwood often continues to tier more layers. This species and the much smaller Pagoda Dogwood (Cornus alternifolia) are the only two dogwoods that bear their leaves alternately, rather than opposite. The leaf is dark green and smooth above, blue-green beneath, carried on long, slender stalks, and clustered at the tips of the shoots. In contrast to most other dogwoods, the Giant Dogwood produces very small creamy-white flowers clustered in large heads in late May and early June.
USDA Zones: 3-7
Height: 35 ft Spread: 35 ft Form: spreading
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: more than 18 inches
Flowers: White
Fruit: Red to black
Discussion: This oriental dogwood is similar to C. alternifolia except that C. controversa is more vigorous. The flat clusters of white flowers are followed by fruits that change from red to black as they ripen. Giant Dogwood has the horizontal branching habit that is common to other members of the genus. The fruit is one-quarter inch in diameter, round, and progresses from reddish to purple to blue-black from August through September. In youth, the young tree has a smooth, gray bark that becomes ridged and furrowed with age. Like most species of dogwood, the Giant Dogwood has a fibrous, spreading root system which transplants best as a young plant. This specimen requires moist, acidic, well-drained soil doing best when planted in partial shade although it will tolerate full sun. The wood is durable, close-grained and reddish-brown in color. In Japan, wooden puppets and dolls are made from the wood of this tree.
