Organic Listada De Gandia Eggplant Seeds

Description: A wonderful French Heirloom form the Le Nord and Picardy regions] This egg-shaped Italian beauty has 5 to 6 inches long fruits, purple with irregular white-stripes. A unique eggplant pleasing to both the eye and the palate. Drought resistant and very easy to grow.
Days to Harvest: 70 to 75 days
Fruit Color: Purple highlighted with creamy White stripes
Fruit Size: 5 to 6 inch fruits
Sun: Choose the sunniest site you can find for eggplant. Soil should be fertile, well-drained and rich in organic matter.
pH: 5.2 to 7.4, amend as needed
Soil: Eggplant also needs a lot of calcium, so add lime to the soil before you plant. (If you use eggshells in your compost (Or shellfish shells, then you will be fine and do not need to add lime.)
Starting Seed: Start seed indoors at least 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frost. (Or start directly in the ground when the last frost has passed.) Harden off seedlings, then transplant them to the garden when all danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature has reached 60 degrees F. Add a half-shovelful of compost or well-rotted manure to each hole before you set in the plant.
Spacing: Set standard-size varieties 18 to 24 inches apart; compact and dwarf kinds can be a little closer together. Stake tall varieties to keep the fruits off the ground. Place a paper collar around each stem to deter cutworms, and add floating row covers or cloches to protect new plants from cold, wind and insects.
Fertilizing and Care: Spray plants with compost tea or fish emulsion three weeks after transplanting and side-dress monthly with a balanced organic liquid fertilizer.
Water: Give eggplant about an inch of water a week and, once the plants are established and the ground is warm, mulch to retain moisture and deter weeds.
Care: Pinch back new blossoms about three weeks before the first expected frost. This will channel the plants' energy into maturing existing fruits rather than producing new ones that won't survive the frost.
Harvesting: Start picking eggplants as soon as they're big enough to use, and keep picking them till the fruits lose their gloss. If they are brown and hard, you have waited too long.
Container: All eggplants thrive in containers, but varieties with smaller fruits look more in proportion. However, larger one add a more dramatic effect to your presentation.
Warning: Eggplant is a member of the nightshade family, all of which contain toxic alkaloids. (Potatoes, tomatoes and peppers also belong to this clan.) While all the fruits of the family are perfectly safe, do not eat any other part of the plant.
