Description: A smaller cousin of the Catalpa bignonioides
USDA Zone: 3b - 9b
Height: 25 – 40 feet, rarely taller
Diameter: Trunk size may be enlarged if pruned, but normally is .75 to 2.5 feet in diameter.
Spread: 25 – 40 feet, however, usually pruned to a much smaller size.
Leaf: Ovate to triangular in shape. The most pointed of all of the Catalpas. Readily identified by leaf shape when mature. (Younger trees display same leaf morphology as Northern Catalpa, until 3 – 5 years growth).
Bark: Light to medium, slightly rough, keeps very well.
Flower: Showy, White to red on the tips, Bloom time varies with soil nutrient level, and temperature in Spring.
Fruit: Pod, long 6 – 10 inches in length, .1 to .25 inches in diameter, splitting in winter to disperse seeds; persistent until Spring.
Sun Exposure: Partial sun to full sun exposure. N Use care when starting to avoid scorch.
Origin: Gansu, Hebei, Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Shaanxi, Shandong, Shanxi, Zhejiang; cultivated in Guangxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan provinces of China
Growth Habits: Deciduous tree, up to 30 feet tall (9 m)
Watering Needs: Moderate water
Soil: Prefers a good moist loamy soil with a wide range of pH. Tolerates heavy clay soils.
Environment: Very resistant to atmospheric pollution
Propagation: Seeds are the best method of propagation. Cuttings may be used, but die off due to rot is great. Transplants very easily.
Discussion: The Manchurian Catalpa is one of the more ornate of the ornate Catalpa Tree family. While all Catalpas are very vigorous with flowers and pods, the Manchurian Catalpa have a very unique leaf structure that lends itself to a longer duration of display. From leave emergence to fall coloration, the leaves are a show stopper, often being saved by leaf collectors for their unique shape. All species in this genus are also commonly referred to as Catawba, and Catwaba Trees.
